Class description:
Olivia draws her teaching from a dedicated practice in Contact Improvisation (CI) and an extensive background in somatic-based movement studies. Olivia’s approach to CI is rooted in a deep awareness of the body’s physical sensations, whether this be in contact with another body or not. Class might begin with hands-on partner work or with a guided, individual warm-up to cultivate awareness by feeling the floor, feeling our body in relationship to gravity and sensing the difference between tension and ease. Principles such as yielding, head-tail connection and push patterns will be explored to assist dancing in contact with others. Olivia will also instruct partner practice, investigating concepts such as rolling point and “sloughing” as well as technical skills such as structural supports and moving in and out of lifts.
