Olivia Shaffer is a choreographer, performing artist, and movement teacher based in Vancouver, Canada.
She teaches dance and improvisation including Contact Improvisation (CI) at EDAM Dance and other cultural institutions for professional, pre-professional and community dancers. She teaches weekly Pilates classes at False Creek Community Centre and Ron Zalko Fitness & Yoga.
As a choreographer and improviser, Olivia creates embodied, presence-based performance. She is currently developing deeply personal work that speaks to universal experiences, providing an opportunity for community engagement and reflection. She has been presented by The Dance Centre's 12 Minutes Max, Shooting Gallery Performance Series, In the House Festival, BLOOM and Art for Impact.
As a freelance dance artist, Olivia performs with Peter Bingham/EDAM Dance, Alvin Tolentino/Co. ERASGA, Delia Brett & Daelik/MACHiNENOiSY, Gail Lotenburg/LINK Dance, Donna Redlick/Donna Redlick Dance, and Starr Muranko/Starrwind Dance Projects.
Olivia is the Assistant to the Artistic Director at EDAM Dance. She holds a BFA and a Liberal Arts Certificate from the School for the Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University. She engages in international training and projects, including a semester in Ghana, West Africa, an apprenticeship with a dance company in Israel, a creation residency in Italy, a Contact Improvisation festival in Ukraine and dance workshops across Europe.
Olivia has a dedicated practice in CI, dance improvisation and somatic-based movement studies with mentors Peter Bingham and Helen Walkley, respectively.
